My UK colleagues are exhibiting and presenting at the Gartner Digital Workplace Summit this week in London, and one of the key themes of the event is digital workplace maturity.

This set me thinking about digital maturity, and how it affects the UC marketplace. To facilitate productivity and achieve success across a hybrid working landscape, the companies we all work for are demanding more and more from their UC stack.

In this evolving landscape of business communications, digital workplace maturity has emerged as a key determining factor of UC success. There is no doubt that understanding your organization’s digital maturity and how it impacts your UC strategy is key. So, when it comes to UC success, what digital maturity factors should we take into consideration?

Digital maturity is a measure of your organization’s ability to respond to opportunities and challenges based on the people, processes, and technology stack that you have in place today. Digital maturity is about more than just the technology decisions you make and it isn’t a product that you can just buy off the shelf. Digital maturity, in many ways, is a reflection of the decisions you have made previously. It is also critical to not overlook the importance of culture on an organization’s digital maturity journey.

Technology buying decisions

A digitally mature workplace will be better placed to make more informed and strategic technology buying decisions going forward because of how they view these investments. Mature organizations prioritize UC solutions that are flexible, scalable, and seamlessly integrate with their existing infrastructure. These businesses look for features like robust security, AI-driven analytics, and automation to ensure their investments are at least somewhat future-proof. If your workplace maturity is low, your UC technology choices might be reactive rather than strategic, leading to potential compatibility issues and higher long-term costs.

Company culture is also a critical ingredient of digital maturity. Have you built a culture that embraces change or protects the status quo….no matter how painful the status quo is? Are employees enabled or inspired to do the hard work of driving real, meaningful change? All too often, I speak with organizations who agree on the path forward…only to find out that nobody on the call has the energy to go and fight the internal battles required to realize a better future.

Integration capabilities

Integration is a significant challenge for organizations with low digital maturity. Mature digital workplaces operate multiple technologies in an established IT framework that allows for smooth integration of new UC tools, ensuring cohesive operation with other business applications. This level of integration is essential for enhancing collaboration and streamlining workflows. If your workplace struggles with integration, it could be a sign that your digital maturity is hindering your UC success, resulting in inefficiencies and disconnected systems.

Hybrid working models

Digital maturity plays an important role in supporting hybrid work. Advanced UC tools are crucial to ensuring seamless communication and collaboration across diverse locations. In mature digital workplaces, both remote and in-office employees have equal access to resources, enabling cohesive teamwork. If your organization finds hybrid work challenging, it might indicate a lack of digital maturity, affecting your ability to fully leverage UC technologies for remote work success.

Digital maturity isn’t just helpful in enabling hybrid working models, it is a critical requirement when you try to gauge whether or not your hybrid or remote work policy is working. An organization lacking digital maturity will struggle to demonstrate success, or more importantly, quickly respond to a policy failure because they will lack the data to tell a cohesive story.

Boosting productivity and success

A mature digital workplace that includes a well-integrated UC stack will significantly enhance productivity. Employees will be able to communicate efficiently, access information easily, and collaborate without technical barriers. This will lead to faster decision-making, reduced downtime, and more agile business operations.
