class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Microsoft has consistently worked to improve quality and usage reporting associated with Lync, then Skype for Business, then Skype Online, and now Teams.\u00a0There have been significant advances over the past nine years, but gaps and opportunities for improvement remain. Let\u2019s first acknowledge the significant advancements Microsoft has made. Then we can examine the current gaps and opportunities to improve.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">The History<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Call Quality Dashboard (CQD) was originally released as a free add-on for Skype for Business Server, the on-premises version of Microsoft\u2019s chat, meeting, and communications server.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In 2015 Microsoft <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/tomtalks.blog\/call-quality-dashboard-skype-business-online-now-public-preview\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">released<\/a> a version of CQD that worked with Skype for Business Online (the platform that would morph eventually into Teams).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In 2016 <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/skype-for-business-blog\/skype-for-business-call-quality-dashboard-v2-is-now-available\/bc-p\/22226\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">version 2.0<\/a> of CQD provided access to 6 months of data and expanded reporting beyond audio quality, including video and appsharing information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The year 2017 brought <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/skype-for-business-it-pro\/annoucement-office-365-call-quality-dashboard-updates-dec-2017\/m-p\/136431\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">further updates<\/a> to CQD that added a reliability issue report focused on call setup issues. This was also the year Teams launched.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember69\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The combined <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/microsoft-teams-blog\/announcing-the-new-microsoft-teams-amp-skype-for-business-admin\/ba-p\/179534\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Teams and Skype for Business admin center<\/a> was launched in 2019 which also integrated the call quality dashboard (although it really was just a menu link to the CQD portal).<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A significant number of CQD updates were launched in 2019 under the \u201c<a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/microsoft-teams-blog\/introducing-the-advanced-call-quality-dashboard\/bc-p\/998253\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Advanced CQD<\/a>\u201d banner. Call data was now updated within 30 minutes (labeled \u201cnear real-time data\u201d) as opposed to taking over 24 hours. The ability to drill down within reports even to the user level was provided along with the addition of several near reports.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">After years of improving CQD, Microsoft pivoted in 2020 bringing call quality data into Power BI (business intelligence) with the release of the <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoftteams\/cqd-power-bi-query-templates#legacy-templates\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">first version<\/a> of the Quality of Experience (QER) templates.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Current State<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The latest version of the Power BI QER templates, version 8, are available <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=102291\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">here<\/a> and a detailed listing of the various Power BI QER reports can be found <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoftteams\/cqd-power-bi-query-templates\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Recently Microsoft has deprecated the original CQD portal, adding a banner that directs users to use Power BI:<\/p>\n<div class=\"reader-image-block reader-image-block--full-width\">\n<figure class=\"reader-image-block__figure\">\n<div class=\"ivm-image-view-model \">\n<div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper \"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ember75\" class=\"ivm-view-attr__img--centered reader-image-block__img evi-image lazy-image ember-view\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/v2\/D5612AQHvDZM6HMqilg\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/0\/1731081849320?e=1736985600&amp;v=beta&amp;t=fB3QDevS0BdNxiJ1boJUvEpNCnOeGCcHeK9UPsLV8K0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"ember76\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The current series of QER Power BI templates is packaged into five different templates, each with many reports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>QER.pbit<\/strong> is the main template with over 20 reports focused on identifying Teams meeting and calling issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>QER MTR.pbit<\/strong> provides reports focused on Microsoft Teams Rooms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>QER PS.pbit<\/strong> is a template optimized to analyze Microsoft Teams Phone System deployments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CQD Teams Auto Attendant &amp; Call Queue Historical Report.pbit<\/strong> includes three reports related to auto attendant, call queue, and agent usage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CQD Teams Usage Report.pbit <\/strong>details how users in your organization are using Teams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Current Gaps<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Despite the significant number of changes and the large number of reports available through the admin center, the Teams admin center, and Power BI, there are several gaps between the current state and the ideal state:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1) Too much data too few insights<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The goal of analytics is to provide actionable insights, that is, to highlight issues you can take corrective action to address. The current reports still too often provide interesting visuals that don\u2019t point IT professionals towards specific issues.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">2) <strong>Inability to compare groups<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The ability to compare quality, reliability, usage, adoption, and user satisfaction across different geographical, functional, and facility groups is one of the most powerful mechanisms to identify potential issues. While some existing Teams reports allow you to group results based on IP address, they lack the ability to track \u201cVIPs\u201d or other functional groups.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"ember84\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>3) Too many \u201cgood\u201d calls<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"ember85\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">CQD uses a very specific formula to classify calls as \u201cpoor\u201d.
